AUGUST 27 – SEPTEMBER 3, 2011
PAINTING AT THE CERTOSA DI PONTIGNANO IN SIENA, ITALY
With Silvermine instructor Dean Fisher
In this one week intensive course students will be exposed to a range of topics related to painting landscapes in the open air in the unique and gorgeous setting of the 14th century monastery, Certosa De Pontignano and its surroundings near Siena, Italy.
With a strong emphasis on looking and seeing sensitively, we will focus on the large areas of tone and color and their relationships and how, when these aspects are well achieved in the painting, a specific sense of space, light and atmosphere are carved out of the flat surface.
We will study great landscape painting throughout history up to the present day and investigate the pictorial components which make these works so exceptional.
The student will apply the knowledge that is gleaned from great works and couple that with overwhelming inspiration from the light filled Tuscan landscape to further develop the student’s perceptual and technical craft and artistic decision making.
By evening, a few portrait and figure painting sessions will be an option as well, alternated with group critiques of the day’s work.
There will also be two day trips during the week to Florence and Arezzo to see these beautiful cities and the art treasures which adorn them.
All accommodations including meals will be within the monastery and be provided by its staff.
